According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 963 new cases of the measles were reported in just one week which makes it the biggest jump so far this year.
Cases of measles are on the rise, and the story of an Israeli flight attendant is reminding us just how unsafe the virus can be.
Currently, La Salle County has no confirmed cases of measles.
Measles is an acute, highly contagious and viral disease, according to the Department of Health. About 90% of non-immune individuals become infected if exposed.
People who visited these areas may have been exposed to the disease and are urged to watch for symptoms.
For those at risk of exposure, symptoms of measles, which include high fever, cough, runny nose, spots in the mouth or throat, and a red rash on the face or body, could appear until May 6.
Measles symptoms typically develop 10-12 days after exposure and last about 7-10 days. Children under age 5 and adults over age 20 are more likely to suffer complications from the disease. There are no anti-viral drugs for treating measles.
If you think you have measles, call your physician's office.
The Associated Press recently noted that there have only been three measles-related deaths reported in the US since 2000. Because the disease is not being continuously transmitted it is declared eliminated even though there are sporadic outbreaks around the country.

Israel has seen an outbreak of measles in the past year, recording 3,600 cases between March 2018 and February 2019, according to the ministry.
Based on WHO's provisional data as of April, 112,163 measles cases have already been reported worldwide, an increase of around 300 percent from last year's 28,124 cases.
Measles is making a resurgence in Israel due primarily to parents not inoculating their children.
Adults who do not have evidence of immunity to the virus, especially older people in their 50s and 60s who are not sure if they were actually vaccinated are advised to get two doses of the MMR vaccine.
Like many others of her generation around the world, the flight attendant, who has not been identified, received only one dose of the measles vaccine when she was a child. A full course (two shots) of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is about 97% effective at preventing the disease, while one shot is about 93% effective. The first should happen as a baby and then the second dose between ages four and six, but the second dose can happen sooner as long as it's 28 days after the first dose.
In the woman's case, her single dose of the vaccine did not work.
The WHO DG said efforts were on to ensure that vaccines reach more people in more countries than ever before. Public Health clinics offer no- or low-priced immunizations for individuals who are uninsured or underinsured.
