Deli-sliced meats and cheeses, a staple of many discerning New Yorkers' daily and late-night diets, have been linked to an ongoing listeria outbreak, says the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
In every case, people felt sick after eating meats and cheeses sliced and purchased at delis.
According to the CDC, eight people have been hospitalized in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and MI, as a result of the bacteria, and one person has died. Roughly one in five victims who become sick from listeria die from the infection, leading to somewhere between about 260 and 500 deaths each year around the country.
The infections have been reported in New York, New Jersey, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
A single, common supplier of deli products has not been identified. Retailers are urged to frequently clean and sanitize deli slicers and other areas where deli products are prepared, stored or served.
