England tried to play fair with the cricketers who have taken them to the top of the 50-over world by Wednesday, leaving Jofra Archer out of their provisional World Cup squad but at least three named will now be looking over their shoulders with a growing sense of foreboding.
Commenting on the selection of the squads, national selector Ed Smith said: 'In line with ICC regulations, we have to name a preliminary squad of 15 for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup before 23 April.
Archer, who has has an English father and holds a British passport, completed a three-year qualification period on March 17 after the European Central Bank changed its residency rules.
Selectors opted for an unchanged unit meaning there was no space for Archer, who qualified to represent England last month after England and Wales Cricket Board amended its eligibility criteria.
Under the previous system, he would not have been eligible until 2022 after a seven-year residency.
The 24-year-old Sussex all-rounder is set to make his debut against Ireland on May 3, with county colleague Chris Jordan, 30, in line to play his first one-day worldwide since September 2016. "He was very excited about the opportunity", Smith said.
Archer, who is playing in the IPL for the Rajasthan Royals, has appeared in just 14 one-day matches as a professional, but England coach Trevor Bayliss has said the all-rounder will feature in the ODIs against Ireland and Pakistan in May.

Arturo Vidal went close three minutes later but could not keep the ball down when it was flicked on to him at the far post after a Messi free-kick.
Archer is set to make his England debut, however, after being included for next month's ODI in Ireland and a T20I and five ODIs against Pakistan, potentially giving him seven outings to make his case.
Barbados-born Archer - described by England all-rounder Ben Stokes as the most "naturally-gifted" bowler he has seen - became eligible for England earlier this year.
"The selection panel has been impressed with Jofra Archer's performances in domestic and franchise cricket", said Smith.
Warwickshire all-rounder Woakes, asked about the possibility of Archer playing at the World Cup, said Tuesday: "It probably wouldn't be fair, morally, but at the same time it's the nature of global sport".
Smith insisted: "Chris Woakes is an outstanding man and he answered the question instinctively". He also gave positive signs about the medium-pacer's selection in the WC squad.
Archer, however, tried to defuse the situation by saying: "I don't want to step on anyone's toes". However, after going good in the T20 tournaments for the past two years, Archer felt that he does have the goods to deliver in the International Cricket. England will take on Australia and Afghanistan in the warm-up matches before the World Cup on May 25 and 27.
