Coming to terms with a hacking and data breach case, Microsoft is reaching out to some users informing them of an Outlook.com hack which exposed data sent over emails to hackers who kept accessing their accounts between January 1 to March 28.
Microsoft clarified that this "affected a limited subset of consumer accounts" and that the malicious activity began at the start of January 2019 and ran through to nearly the end of March, so essentially lasted three months.
"Our data indicates that account-related information (but not the content of any e-mails) could have been viewed, but Microsoft has no indication why that information was viewed or how it may have been used", the tech company informed affected users in an email.

Microsoft said it immediately disabled the compromised credentials when it became aware of the breach, prohibiting further access. But a number of people received a different email that indicated hackers had wider access, including to email contents. Because of that, an European Union investigation is likely to follow into whether Microsoft complied with the regulation and whether it did its best to prevent the hack.
Microsoft told customers that one of its support agent's credentials were comprised, allowing cybercriminals to access and view information such as email addresses, folder names, subject lines and other email addresses with which users interacted. Enterprise users were unaffected. Although Microsoft says that login details and personal information couldn't have been stolen through this particular approach, the company is advising you mix up your password anyway for the hell of it, too.
Microsoft did not respond to multiple requests for additional comment. The company stressed that the content of the emails and attachments weren't compromised.
