House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, along with the top Democrat on the House and Senate intelligence panels, argued that Barr's words undermined both his own credibility and that of the Justice Department.
US Attorney General William Barr sparred with Democrats on Wednesday over whether "spying" occurred on President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, and said that a redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the election will be out next week.
What did the attorney general say?
When Barr said he believed there was "spying" against the Trump campaign he explicitly compared that to spying on civil rights and anti-war activists during the 1960s.
And though the attorney general was reportedly opposed to the idea of reversing course on Obamacare at first, he then expounded on his reasoning for eventually deciding that his department would step back from defending the law, doing so in a way that drew more questions.
AG Barr said he expects to release a redacted copy of SC Mueller's report next week, and Dems are expressed concern that his version will hide wrongdoing by the President.
"You're not suggesting, though, that spying occurred?" "The question is whether it was predicated, adequately predicated, and I'm not suggesting it wasn't adequately predicated, but I need to explore that". "I want to make sure there was no unauthorized surveillance".
BRIAN SCHATZ: I think the word spying could cause everybody in the cable news ecosystem to freak out. A separate review, ordered by the DoJ's inspector general, is probing whether the FBI and federal prosecutors abused their powers in obtaining warrants to surveil Trump campaign associate Carter Page, with that inquiry expected to be wrapped up by May or June. "AG Barr must retract his statement immediately or produce specific evidence to back it up".

While Ali is revered by Muslims as Prophet Mohammad's successor, Bajrang Bali is another name for Lord Hanuman. In separate orders, the Election Commission also "condemned" the two speeches and "censured" the politicians.
Barr bluntly defended his dealing with the report and said portions must remain hidden to comply with the law.
Barr was loath to provide many details other than to say that the Justice Department planned to release the redacted report in the next week.
"I've heard their names", Barr responded, smiling.
Asked Tuesday whether he ever conveyed such concerns to the White House, Barr told lawmakers he had "ample opportunity to present my views" to the White House. I'm saying that I am concerned about it and looking into it.
His comments before a Senate panel on Wednesday suggest the origins of the Russian Federation investigation may have been mishandled.
BARR: Is that more appropriate in your mind?
Barr told the committee that he would review all the intelligence activities directed at Trump's 2016 campaign.
