Representatives of Sens. Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren, former representative Beto O'Rourke and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Julián Castro said they won't be attending the AIPAC conference, which begins Sunday in Washington, without giving a reason.
The Associated Press also reported that presidential candidate, John Delaney, would not attend due to a scheduling conflict.
It cited a poll of its members in which more than 74 percent agreed any progressive candidate running for the US presidency should skip the conference.
"Since 2008, we have only had presidential candidates speaking in actual election years", said the source.
AIPAC's conference comes on the backdrop of a political firestorm that erupted in the wake of comments made by freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota about Israel that many have interpreted as anti-Semitic.Читайте также: The whole world should take New Zealand as an example
The call to boycott the conference was viewed as further evidence of the generational shift within the Democratic Party over America's relationship with the Israeli government, which has been accused of brutally occupying Palestinian lands and massacring Palestinian civilians with impunity.
The House earlier this month overwhelmingly passed the resolution to condemn anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry. Democrats have carried Jewish voters by anywhere between 39 and 60 points in White House races since 2000.
President Trump is doubling down on his claims the Democrat Party has become increasingly anti-Semitic. "I mean, I don't know what's happened to them but they are totally anti-Israel".
Trump, whose son-in-law Jared Kushner and daughter Ivanka Trump are Jewish, is not scheduled to attend the conference.
"I am thankful - never in my lifetime did we imagine or think people would be seeing AIPAC [this way]", he told Al Jazeera. "At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights". Some Jewish Democrats were openly frustrated that the measure didn't exclusively include anti-Semitism, and 23 Republicans voted against it because they believed it was watered down.
Omar recieved pushback for arguing that pro-Israel advocates are pushing "allegiance to a foreign country".При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
