In what can only be read as a rushed response to this demo, earlier today Nvidia held a briefing call for technical press in order to firstly re-eschew the benefits of having dedicated RT Cores for processing real-time ray tracing and secondly confirm the upcoming release of a driver that will allow GTX 1060 6GB graphics cards and above - including the recently released GTX 1660 and GTX 1660 Ti - to start turning on ray tracing in the few games that now support it. DLSS (Deep Learning Super-Sampling), another RTX technology, isn't supported either, which uses cloud-based AI to simulate games at higher resolutions and teaches your GPU how to mimic that level of detail.
NVIDIA MADE such a song and dance about ray-tracing that it's bringing the slick real-time rendering capabilities to its older 10-series GTX cards.
Don't expect to be running high framerates on raytraced games with your former-flagship GTX 1080 card, however.
It's a neat trick to push ray-tracing. Nvidia has also announced that Unity and Unreal Engine now support ray tracing, allowing developers to implement the tech into their games. Nvidia says RTX GPUs will be two to three times faster than GTX ones thanks to their RT cores.
RTX cards have dedicated RT cores that perform the various calculations needed for ray tracing, whereas GTX cards will perform these calculations on shader cores, sharing space with other GPU functions.
With the new drivers installed, all the players will able to enjoy real-time ray tracing in supported games.
Nvidia's ray tracing effects won't just be exclusive to the company's RTX cards.
