Authorities couldn't find his hand and are nearly certain the dog ingested it, he said.
A four-year-old boy in Utah lost part of his arm and hand after reaching through a fence to play with some dogs on Sunday afternoon, officials said.
Police and medics were called to a Layton home around 3:30 p.m. Sunday when a father discovered that his son's right hand was bitten off by a neighboring dog, according to Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook.
The dog bite amputated the boy's hand from between the elbow and wrist to the entire hand, Cook said.
KSTU reported that the boy had a sock on his hand and was trying to play with two Husky breed dogs through a fence.
In a tweet, the Layton City Fire department confirmed that the boy was airlifted to the Primary Children's Hospital in a stable condition and required surgical intervention.
The boy was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Cook said he credits the family for quickly stepping in and controlling the bleeding before they arrived. "So at this point, it doesn't seem like reattachment is going to be an option for us", he said.
Cook said that there has never been a problem with the pets before, adding this was the most severe case of a dog biting a person he had ever seen.
The dogs were not known to aggressive, their owners said.
Stacy Taft, a neighbor, witnessed the dog attack in horror. I mean, no parents want to go through that. "They're not typically aggressive, being family dogs".
The husky will be quarantined for 10 days, however officials have not determined if it will be put down or listed as a risky dog given it was the animal's first reported bite.
"He's seen them and maybe even done something similar with them before, but for whatever reason this one kind of took a tragic turn today", Cook said, according to the publication.
