Conor McGregor of Ireland looks on in the octagon before competing against Khabib Nurmagomedov of Russian Federation in their UFC lightweight championship bout during the UFC 229 event inside T-Mobile Arena on October 6, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada. McGregor ultimately did not fight at UFC 200, but he appeared in the Octagon one month later in a highly profitable second fight against his rival Nate Diaz.
"Hey guys quick announcement, I've made a decision to retire from the sport formally known as "Mixed Martial Art" today", McGregor said on his official Twitter account.
In April 2016 the former two-division UFC champion tweeted "I have chose to retire young".
'I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition.
The latest McGregor announcement is curious for a number of reasons, the first being that it arrived just hours after an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon aired in the United States. The whiskey will keep him busy, and I'm sure he has other things he's working on.
However, it's not the first time that McGregor has announced his "retirement" from the sport.
Initial reactions in the MMA world seem to range anywhere from disbelief to exchanging knowing looks, as the Irish superstar has once teased retirement before on Twitter in 2016. During the FIFA World Cup previous year, he attended the World Cup final in Moscow as a special guest of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

British Airways passengers mistakenly flown to Edinburgh instead of Dusseldorf
The captain apologised to the passengers, informing them that the plane would refuel in Edinburgh before heading to Germany . It said the safety of the passengers had not been compromised at any time during the "involuntary stopover".
"I don't necessarily need to fight".
A melee then broke out following his fourth-round submission loss at UFC 229, which included Nurmagomedov leaping out of the Octagon to attack McGregor's training partner, as well as a brawl inside the cage featuring members of both fighters' teams.
McGregor, the biggest draw in UFC history, had been rumored for a fight with Donald Cerrone this summer, but Cerrone has been booked for a May fight instead.
He leaves the sport with a 21-4-0 record, and UFC belts in two divisions, as per CNN.
"He has been so fun to watch", White said in the tweet.
We have, of course, seen something similar to this before from the Irishman.
