"It's a very heavy death toll", he told Reuters.
Traditional Dogon hunters killed at least 50 people in an attack on a Peul community village in central Mali on Saturday, military and local officials said.
While some of the disputes between the ethnic groups involve land and water, the Dogon accuse the Peulh-Fulani of supporting jihadists, while the Peulh-Fulani accuse the Dogon of supporting the Malian army.
The assaults on the villages of Ogossagou and Welingara took place as a U.N. Security Council mission visited Mali to try to find solutions to violence that killed hundreds of civilians past year and is spreading across West Africa's Sahel region.
They regrouped and began launching attacks against the Malian, French and United Nations forces.
On Friday, a Mali-based al-Qaeda affiliate said it had carried out an attack last week on a military base that left more than 20 soldiers dead.
"This morning around 5 a.m. the Dogon militia attacked the village of Egossogou", said Sekou Allaye Bolly, who is a Peulh militia leader involved with peace efforts in the area. The government in Bamako has denied their accusations that it turns a blind eye to - or even encourages - Dogon attacks on the Fulani. A local mayor says pregnant women were cut open with machetes and people were thrown down wells.Читайте также: Winx wins final Sydney race, star racehorse’s 32nd straight victory
The armed attacks took place as a United Nations Security Council mission visited Mali seeking solutions to violence that killed hundreds of civilians previous year and is spreading across West Africa's Sahel region.
A group called Dan Na Ambassagou is said to comprise a number of self-defence organisations from Dogon villages and others. A group led by radical Islamist preacher Amadou Koufa has recruited mainly from the Muslim Fulani community.
The jihadists have consistently tried to exploit a sense of persecution among the Fulani, whose semi-nomadic, pastoral way of life sometimes brings them into conflict with more settled farmers like the Dogon, by arming and training them.
The Fulani have repeatedly called for more protection from the authorities. The region, though, has been destabilized in recent years along with much of central Mali.
France intervened in the affairs of Mali -its former colony- in 2013, in an attempt to push back jihadist groups who at the time were rampant in the country's north.
Despite the presence of UN peacekeepers, a strong French military contingent and the creation of a five-nation military force in the region, jihadist violence has not abated.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
