Sunday afternoon, a tornado debris signature was seen on radar as a damaging storm moved toward Smiths Station, an Alabama town of about 22,000 located just across the state line from Columbus, Georgia.
Meteorologist Don Harrigan with the Tallahassee office of the weather service tells The Associated Press that the tornado hit about 5:45 p.m. local time Sunday.
At least a dozen tornadoes touched down in Alabama and Georgia on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Severe storms destroyed mobile homes, snapped trees and left a trail of destruction amid weather warnings extending into Georgia, Florida and SC, authorities said.
