Will groundhog give good news for winter sufferers?

Lundy also explained the process that would soon unfold - that Phil would direct Groundhog Club President Bill Deeley to one of two scrolls with the proper prediction written upon it.

Phil was not the only groundhog who predicted spring would come early.

Gentlemen in top hats form the inner circle and look after Phil and their prediction was somewhat a surprise as in past years they have often announced six more weeks of winter.

Just before 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow in Pennsylvania at sunrise and didn't see his shadow.

A proclamation will be read aloud that determines if Phil has seen his shadow (meaning six more weeks of winter) or hasn't, which purportedly means an early spring.

Italy falls into recession as output shrinks
This latest round of economic reports, combined with some weak statistics in early 2019, bodes poorly for the eurozone as a whole. Eurozone GDP increased 0.2 percent quarter-on-quarter in the last three months of 2018, or 1.2 percent on a year-on-year basis.

'Amazing' Son hailed by Pochettino despite Asian Cup disappointment
Tottenham beat the Magpies in their first game of the season to see themselves off to the flawless start. But the Netherlands global is now set to be added to the club's 25-man Premier League squad list.

It's celebrated across North America, but in Punxsutawney they have a much more specific tradition.

Jeff Lundy from the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club welcomed the largest crowd ever seen on Groundhog Day Saturday as the country learned spring was on the way. Even then, it marked a milestone in the winter, and the weather that day was important. Since hedgehogs aren't native to the United States, another hibernating animal was chosen in their stead: the groundhog.

Lots of people tune in each year for Punxsutawney Phil's big day, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has declared the groundhog has "no predictive skill".

If you want to do some of your own Groundhog Day celebrating over on this side of the pond, you're in luck, because Sky Cinema is aptly showing the film Groundhog Day on a loop from 6am until 11:30pm.
