Eastern, deploying the Beresheet lunar lander 33 minutes later, and the Nusantara Satu telecom satellite with the S5 experimental smallsat almost 45 minutes after liftoff.
SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket launches Indonesia's Nusantara Satu telecommunications satellite as well as the Israeli Beresheet lunar lander and an Air Force research satellite from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. "Good luck, Beresheet!" wrote the 89-year-old Aldrin, who was the lunar module pilot when he and fellow astronaut and mission commander Neil Armstrong became the first two humans to walk on the moon on July 21, 1969. But Israel's privately funded lunar lander - a first not just for Israel but commercial space - generated the buzz.
It is scheduled to lift off on Thursday evening from Cape Canaveral in Florida, the start of an eight-week journey to the moon's surface, with a planned April 11 arrival. According to SpaceX, Falcon 9 B1048's third successful launch and landing faced the Block 5 booster with "some of the most challenging reentry conditions to date".
Beresheet was one of three payloads to be carried aloft by the SpaceX rocket.
Israel's first space mission is on its way to the moon!
"A 32-minute backup launch window opens on Friday, February 22 at 8:41 p.m. EST", SpaceX said in its description of the upcoming launch broadcast. The proportion of flight-proven to new booster launches is likely to continue to grow in 2019, ultimately reaching a point where new boosters are limited to inaugural hardware debuts or specific contractual requests from conservative United States government customers.Читайте также: Imran Khan Holds National Security Meet Amid Heightened Indo-Pak Tensions
The initial project was conceived in the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition to successfully land an unmanned probe on the Moon, which was eventually discontinued before a victor was declared since no competitors were able to complete their projects by the March 31, 2018, deadline.
Bad weather threatened the recovery of the first-stage booster, but after 8-and-a-half minutes following launch, the booster successfully landed on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
The modern day space race has also seen China land a rover on the far side of the moon.
"At SpaceIL we hope that the next generation of engineers and scientists will be able to bring Beresheet back to Earth", the company said.
The lander, named Beresheet (meaning "in the beginning" in Hebrew), was built by the Israeli nonprofit organization SpaceIL, which began working on this mission in 2011 as a contestant in the Google Lunar X Prize. While Musk has cornered the market on commercial rocket launches, SpaceIL and IAI are hoping to find a niche in low-cost moon landings, so space agencies or, one day, private individuals or organizations, could send cameras and research equipment to the moon for their own purposes.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
