On Wednesday, the Hollywood Reporter posted an open letter from some of the biggest filmmakers in Hollywood to the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the producers of the show, urging them to reverse their decision.
The decision has been met with derision across the industry, with more than 40 top cinematographers and directors - including Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee - sending a letter of protest to the academy.
In an effort to shorten its telecast and win back viewers after a record-low 26.5 million people watched in 2018, the Academy chose to present four statues during ad breaks.
The Academy replied that the speeches of the winners in the four categories would still be broadcast, while at next year's Oscars, there would be a rotation, with other awards being moved to commercial breaks.
The 91st Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on February 24. "As a director, without my cinematographer, editor, hair and makeup, there's no movie", he said, suggesting Oscar organizers "get rid of musical numbers" to stick to a three-hour running time.
It goes on to include a quote from another of the letter's signatories, actor-director Seth Rogen: "What better way to celebrate achievements in film than to NOT publicly honour the people whose job it is to film things".

"In its mandate to shorten the Academy Awards" telecast, the Academy has insulted all of us who work "below the line.' Many of our members and those of other IATSE Locals are understandably upset", Editors Guild president Alan Heim said tonight in an email to his members.
"The Academy was founded in 1927 to recognize and uphold excellence in the cinematic arts, inspire imagination and help connect the world through the universal medium of motion pictures", their letter reads. "Unfortunately, we have drifted from this mission in our pursuit of presenting entertainment rather than in presenting a celebration of our art form and the people behind it".
"Although we understand the tremendous pressure put on the Academy by the ABC Network to shorten the show to three hours", ACE president Stephen Rivkin. wrote, "we can not agree with any idea that diminishes the effort for which we have fought so hard: to promote and recognize film editing as the key creative position that it holds in the process of making a film".
