"I've always been trying to split my time (between two tours, but) I'm sick of always showing up in Florida 100th in the FedEx Cup".
He must play at least four events, not counting majors or World Golf Championships, in order to hold on to the European Tour membership.
"I think as well with the world ranking points, everyone out here, all of their contracts with sponsors, it's all about world ranking points", he said. "I get a buzz from that". That's the truth. The European Tour is a stepping stone.
Dustin Johnson has 19 PGA Tour titles to his name but insists winning is not easy as he prepares to defend his Tournament of Champions crown. "We're saying that Brian Harman has got a big advantage, he can basically place it", said McIlroy. But in making his 2019 debut there rather than Abu Dhabi in a fortnight to compete on the European Tour - a circuit he describes as "a stepping stone" - he's proving that in the modern game, the top players call all the shots.
McIlroy played 18 events on the PGA Tour in 2018, and he snapped an 18-month winless stretch by capturing the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
"I feel like every time I show up to the start of the year on the PGA TOUR other guys have played almost 10 events and I'm sort of playing my first or my second one", he added. I'm not putting anyone down in Europe, but the depths of the field and everything is just that bit better over here.
European Golfer of the Year Francesco Molinari will also feature in the 34-strong field, along with Englishman Paul Casey, who will make his first appearance in the tournament since 2010.

Instead of playing in the Middle East, he's in Kapalua trying to fix the fact he ranks 186th in the FedExCup having played just one event this season at the World Golf Championships - HSBC Champions in China.
"The ultimate goal is here", McIlroy said.
A player's capacity to win the event is often dependant on how they handled the off season and the preparation they have been involved in over Xmas and New Year and perhaps that is one of the reasons Australians have done so well especially in more recent years as most had played Australia's flagship events late in the previous year ahead of beginning the golfing year in early January. For now McIlroy is permanently settled in America, and has no plans to go back home anytime soon.
"Look, you can talk all you want about these bigger events in Europe, but you can go to America and play for more money and more ranking points".
And yet, I'm fading him to start. "I've done everything I feel like I need to do to say OK, I'm going to make my own decisions and do what I want".
That McIlroy is in Hawaii this week is the first sign of his new priorities.
