The South Korean Foreign Ministry said on Monday that Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo by telephone to discuss Pompeo and Trump's meetings with North Korean envoy Kim Yong-chol last week.
This discovery comes days after President Trump's announcement Friday that he is meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un next month.
The White House made the announcement after the president met with Kim Yong Chol, the North Korean envoy to the USA, behind closed doors for an hour-and-a-half on Friday.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held talks on North Korea with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts ahead of a summit between Pyongyang's leader and the USA president, the State Department said on Monday (Jan 21). "They're still going to have all this operational capability".
North Korea has still made no commitments to allow weapons inspections or dismantle its growing arsenal of warheads and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Trump has said his own negotiating skills can bypass stalled talks among lower-level diplomats to strike a deal for North Korea to relinquish a nuclear weapons program that analysts said can now reliably strike the United States.

US President Donald Trump identified his nuclear talks with North Korea as among his greatest achievements in the first half of his first term, amid hopes for substantial results from the second summit between Pyongyang and Washington next month.
CSIS researchers had previously identified 13 of the estimated 20 undeclared missile operating sites in November previous year, which drew concerns among nuclear experts that the hermit country may not be winding down its nuclear arsenal. Trump's claims that North Korea is a diminished threat have been contradicted by the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies.
Located 132 miles (212km) north of the demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas, the Sino-ri complex is a seven-square-mile (18sq km) base that houses a regiment-sized unit equipped with Nodong-1 medium-range missiles, the report said.
As the White House prepares for a second summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a new report indicates that researchers have discovered a secret North Korean ballistic missile launch site.
The research in Monterey suggested that North Korea has jointly published at least 100 research papers with foreign scientists, and that these "have implications for military purposes, such as developing weapons of mass destruction".
Cha added that the base is 'clearly a mainstay of their strategic missile force'. But "it has fulfilled broader missions" as an operational test and development site and training facility subordinate to the "Strategic Force of the Korean People's Army", the report said.
Unlike other known North Korean ballistic missile operating bases, which are "nestled within narrow and steep mountain valleys", the main parts of this base are "distributed within a shallow valley and rolling hills", the report said.
