Gates was a star witness over the summer in a high-profile trial of Manafort, after he had pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and conspiracy against the United States in Mueller's probe in exchange for agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors under a deal that could lead to a reduced sentence. Manafort's lawyers also said that Mueller's team had accused Manafort of lying "about sharing polling data with Mr. Kilimnik related to the 2016 presidential campaign".
In a joint-status report filed by Mueller, Andrew Weissmann and Greg Andres, along with Gates' attorney Thomas Green, the parties agreed to provide an update within 60 days - "no later than March, 15, 2019". Though the president's legal team has gone back and forth about whether Trump would speak directly with Mueller, his most prominent lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, recently said that an interview would only happen "over my dead body". Kilimnik is a Ukrainian national who was trained as a linguist by the Russian army and also has a background in Russian intelligence.
Both initially pleaded not guilty, but Gates succumbed to the mounting legal and financial pressure in February 2018 and struck a plea deal with prosecutors. Manafort was convicted in Virginia on eight counts and later pleaded guilty to charges in Washington. Mueller saw fit to file the Manafort document under seal in order to redact details.
The filing by Mueller's team on Tuesday was meant to support its allegations that Manafort lied about several subjects even after he pleaded guilty and began cooperating with the investigation.
His attorneys have said that any misstatements on his part after his plea agreement were unintentional.

Judge Denies Requests To Pay Federal Workers During Shutdown
The Labor Department will release data for the week ending January 12, the third week of the shutdown, next week. But not all federal workers qualify.
Gates pleaded guilty in February to reduced charges of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and conspiring against the United States and agreed to cooperate with Mueller.
According to the filing, on May 28, 2018, Manafort received a text message from an associate claiming to have an upcoming meeting with Trump who asked, "If I see [the president of the United States] one on one next week am I ok to remind him of our relationship?" American intelligence agencies and Mueller have said Russian Federation was the source of hacked material released by WikiLeaks during the campaign that was damaging to Hillary Clinton's presidential effort. Manafort replied: "Yes...even if not one on one". But the evidence so far shows a broad range of Trump associates had Russia-related contacts during the 2016 presidential campaign and transition period, and several lied about the communication.
The president also hasn't ruled out pardons for Manafort or others in the Russian Federation imbroglio.
Kilimnik, who is suspected of having ties to Russian intelligence, was charged by Mueller for obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges for allegedly tampering with witnesses. Kilimnik has previously said the pair met in NY around that date.
