Elevated blood pressure in people under 40 is associated with reduced brain volume, a new study has found.
Bao's team looked at the food habits of nearly 107,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79 from 40 clinics across the United States between 1993 and 1998.
Those who ate one or more servings a day had an eight per cent higher risk compared with those who did not eat fried food.
During those two decades, 31,588 women died, including 9,320 heart-related deaths, 8,358 cancer deaths and 13,880 deaths from other causes. Those who consume one or more servings per day had an 8 percent higher risk than those who did not eat fried food.
'And if you eat a lot of fried food then it often follows that your wider diet and lifestyle could be healthier.
However, a third miscellaneous category of foods - including tortilla chips, pork skins, crackers and fried plantains - didn't present the same association with premature death.
Carried out by researchers at the University of Iowa and the Washington University School of Medicine, the new study assessed the diets of 106,966 women aged 50 to 79 who had enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study between 1993 to 1998 and who were followed up to 2017.

Gum infection could be linked to Alzheimer’s, study says

In a recently published paper, a team of researchers linked fried food, such as fried chicken and fried fish, to a higher risk of death from any cause except cancer. The results were published on January 23 on the BMJ medical journal.
One or more servings of fried chicken a day was linked to a 13 per cent higher risk of death from any cause and a 12 per cent higher risk of heart-related death compared with eating no fried food, and one or more servings of fried fish/shellfish a day was linked to a 7 per cent higher risk of death from any cause and a 13 per cent higher risk of heart-related death. Fried fish was linked with a 7% higher risk of death.
Women who ate fried foods more regularly tended to be younger, non-white, with less education and a lower income.
But other factors could play a role as well, Dr. Bao said. "And fried food is just one component of an overall diet".
"The frying process at home could be different from the frying process away from home", Bao said.
So science has ruined fried chicken for us.
"Heart attacks occur from cholesterol plaques building up in the coronary arteries", Bhusri said.
The observational study is the first in the United States, to Bao's knowledge, to look at the relationship between fried food consumption and mortality.
