At 10.26am Beijing time (2.26am GMT), the Chang'e-4 probe touched down in the South Pole-Aitken Basin, Chinese state media said.
A Chinese space probe successfully touched down on the far side of the moon on Thursday, China's space agency said, hailing the event as a historic first and a major achievement for the country's space program.
China's Chang'e 4 mission could use soil tests and temperature measurements to reveal new clues to the cataclysmic collision that created the moon and uncover the origins of the water that is unexpectedly abundant in lunar soil. It comprises two pieces of hardware, the main lander, and a rover and has been built initially as a backup for the 2013 Chang'e-3 mission.
While the United States and Russian Federation have the capacity to launch a similar landing on the far side, China has beaten them to it this time, though its academics put that in perspective. Chang'e-4 will examine this mysterious area of the Moon.
Previous spacecraft have seen the far side of the moon but none has landed on it.

"The far side of the moon is a rare quiet place that is free from interference of radio signals from Earth", mission spokesman Yu Guobin said, according to Xinhua.
The next phase of China's lunar exploration will kick off in late 2019 with the launch of Chang'e 5. Chang'e-4 communicates with Earth via a relay satellite in orbit around the moon, something that adds another level of complexity and risk, according to Jim Head, a researcher at Brown University who worked with Chinese colleagues to analyze Chang'e-4's landing site.
China's space community is taking pride in the successful landing, which posed technical challenges because the moon blocks direct communication between the spacecraft and its controllers on Earth.
The far side's terrain is rugged with a multitude of impact craters.
The transfer mechanism unlocked as planned with one side reaching the moon's surface, allowing the rover to descend to the surface from the slope.
