Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, who faced criticism over his department's response to the deadly Parkland, Florida, school shooting a year ago, was officially suspended by new Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday.
In his press conference today, DeSantis said, "The neglect of duty and the incompetence that was connected to the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has been well-documented, and I have no interest in dancing on Scott Israel's political grave. I served the county honorably", he said in an evening news conference at the New Mount Olive Baptist Church, a historically black church in Fort Lauderdale.
The governor's executive order [PDF] excoriates Israel not just over the horrific Parkland shooting, but for similar failures and lack of leadership regarding the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting in 2017.
Eleven days after the massacre, more than 70 Republican representatives and Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran sent a letter to then-Gov. Rick Scott, refused to suspend Israel, saying he wanted to wait until investigations into the February 14 shooting that left 17 dead were complete before deciding.
In a separate statement introducing Tony, DeSantis added, "The people of Broward County deserve accountable, competent leaders who can safeguard our communities".
With Israel gone, Andrew Pollack, whose 18-year-old daughter Meadow died in the Parkland shooting, said he still wants to see Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie removed.
The report claimed Broward sheriffs as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation neglected to follow up on tips regarding the shooter and the danger he posed to students and faculty months before the attack.
Major League Baseball rumors: Yankees, DJ LeMahieu near 2-year deal
As such, the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox became the effective front runners to sign Machado in free agency. The Yankees don't have a glaring need for Machado, so many will jump to the conclusion that they've moved on from Machado.
Ford Job Cuts: How Will Its $11 Billion Restructuring Plan Help?
Mr Armstrong declined to say how many jobs will be cut, but he said the impact will be "significant". The firm cut 1,000 temporary contract workers at its plant in Solihull in 2017.
Tyson Chandler Considered Warriors Before Signing With Lakers
That would be the opener of a five-game road trip for the Warriors, which begins with two games in Los Angeles. But, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Tuesday that Cousins has "gotten through a barrier" in his recovery.
Commission members also grilled Israel over BSO's policy for deputies dealing with an active shooter. "These incidents demonstrate Sheriff Israel's repeated incompetence and neglect of duty".
Kaplan said he had advised Israel only to make a statement and to answer no questions.
"One more second, and she [would have made] it into the stairwell", he said.
Sheriff Israel inserted the word "may" in the BSO policy, and it is insufficient and fails to unequivocally convey the expectation that deputies are expected to immediately enter an active assailant scene where gunfire is active and to neutralize the threat.
Israel, 62, was elected sheriff in 2012 after a long career in law enforcement. Israel has said none of those contacts warranted an arrest.
Several responding Broward sheriff's deputies were either seen on camera or described as taking time to retrieve and put on ballistic vests as well as removing and replacing other equipment while shots were still being fired in the school, the report said. Even before a state fact-finding commission empaneled to review the tragedy released its findings, DeSantis was criticizing Israel on the campaign trail.
