New research warns that a warming world caused by increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and coupled with periodic changes in the geometry of Earth's orbit could warm oceans, leading to a loss of sea ice (right) and sparking a dramatic retreat of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, and elevate sea levels worldwide.
They said the East Antarctic ice sheet is thawing at the fringes and adding to rising seas, unlike many past reports which have concluded that the eastern sheet has so far resisted a melt seen on the western side.
American and Dutch scientists found that yearly ice mass loss in Antarctica increased sixfold in the past 40 years.
However, the most surprising result was the rate of net ice loss in East Antarctica, which is by far the continent's biggest ice vault, capable of almost 52 meters (170 feet) of sea level rise.
Rignot said, 'As the Antarctic ice sheet continues to melt away, we expect multi-metre sea level rise from Antarctica in the coming centuries. A loss of sea ice due to warming climate could trigger instability of the Antarctic Ice Sheet with dire implications for global sea levels.
Scientists are urging for a reduction in emissions after a new study found the tilt of the Earth could exacerbate the melting of the Antarctic ice sheets. Last year's study, which took several teams' work into consideration, found little to no loss in East Antarctica recently and gains in the past.
The research is important because it teases out the pattern of growth and decay of the ice sheet over geologic time, including the presence of sea ice, a thin and fragile layer of frozen ocean surrounding Antarctica.
Even more, the new study found out that regions in East Antarctica, once considered safe and stable, are now losing a lot of ice due to increasing global warming.
Anna Faris offers to officiate ex Chris Pratt's wedding
In January 2018, Faris shared what it's been like doing the coparenting thing with Pratt. But they have stayed committed to amicably co-parenting their 6-year-old son, Jack .
VW And Ford Make It Official, Launch Global Partnership
Hackett and Diess confirmed that their companies were fully committed to making this alliance a success. "It's hugely complex. Ford and Volkswagen will form a joint committee of equal persons representing each company to oversee these new developments.
USA and Turkish presidents discuss safe zone in northern Syria
U.S. support for the YPG during the Syria conflict has been a major source of friction between Ankara and Washington. In a surprising move, Trump last month announced the withdrawal of American forces from Syria.
Climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer of Princeton University, told Science magazine it "changes the ball game for sea level rise in this century".
Melting in West Antarctica and the Antarctica Peninsula account for about four-fifths of the ice loss.
In 2017, a study suggested that New York City could be in danger of getting hit with storms that occurred once every 500 years, every five years. If melted, the Antarctic ice will cause the average sea level to rise 57.2 meters or 188 feet.
Currently, Antarctica's sea ice is at the lowest January levels since detailed observations began in 1979, according to data from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center.
The sectors losing the most ice mass are adjacent to warm ocean water, according to the researchers. The first harmful effect of this risky development: higher sea-level rise.
The recent melting rate is 15 per cent higher than what a study found past year.
The A-68 iceberg separated from the Larsen C ice shelf in July 2017. The ice shelves act as an ocean-facing, protective barrier, keeping land-ice locked in place.
The continental ice sheet is, by far, the largest single mass of ice on Earth - miles deep in places and containing more than 26 million cubic kilometers of ice.
