The Greek god Apollo had a friend who'd sometimes take him for a ride: the sun god Helios.

As Americans reflect on the anniversary, the display highlights what the mission did for the space program. However, Anders alleged that the present-day NASA has turned into a "jobs programme". We imagined what the world would look like when viewed from the heavens. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. In a recent interview, Bill Anders, an astronaut from the Apollo 8 mission, called the idea of sending manned missions to Mars "almost ridiculous" and said that he doesn't understand why people are so gung-ho about it.
Before Neil Armstrong was the world's most famous astronaut, and after Yuri Gagarin was the world's most famous cosmonaut, there were Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders.
Low's pitch was accepted, and on August 19, 1968, NASA directors gave the Apollo 8 crew their new mission. It was a thrilling, life-changing perspective, the first humans separated from Earth's biosphere'. "Wait a minute, just let me get the right setting here now", he said. I can see most of South America, all the way up to Central America, Yucatan, and the peninsula of Florida. "I just happened to be in the right place at the right time".
Cowan asked Borman, "Did you know at the time what kind of impact it would have?"

Gatwick drone hoax? Police admit Christmas ruining drone may not have existed
He said that the detectives were investigating 67 reports of drone sightings from the public, police officers and airport staff. Police say the motive for the drone incursion is not yet known but they do not believe it is "terror-related".
Looking back at the Earth, Anders can't help being fascinated by its beauty, and so takes three or four pictures every now and then, even though that's not strictly scheduled.
'The striking image in "Earthrise" - of a lovely planet, all by itself (aside from a barren moonscape) - conveyed a clear message that we must all come together to save it. "Nobody told me to take a picture of the Earth", Anders said later. He pointed out that the USA space agency could not get into the moon today because it is "so ossified".
They weren't the only ones overcome with emotion.
Humbled by their mission, the three men read the first 10 verses from the Book of Genesis in a broadcast. The earth is coming up. Just paint me a picture of what that looked like. Wow, is that pretty!' said Anders, the crew's lead photographer.
With modern digital technology, however, the real first Earthrise image - originally in black and white - has now been remastered to have the combined resolution and color of the first three images. "I remember sitting with some friends on the hood of my vehicle in the parking lot looking up at the moon, which was just this fingernail sliver that was visible". On viewers' screens, there was a slight brightening on the lunar horizon, and then a crackly recitation by the astronauts.
"It was 240,000 miles away".
Such a sight inspires contrasting feelings.
Later that evening, the crew did a live TV broadcast, showing images of the Earth and moon to what has been described as the largest TV audience in history at the time. The photo have inspired the environmental movement to a great extent and the "global consciousness" promoted, say today, a lot of space. "Within a year-and-a-half, the first Earth Day was organized, [and] the momentum emerged in the Congress for the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act".
From the mission, the astronauts captured one of the most iconic photographs of the space age: the Earthrise.
