The statement reads, "The situation on the Lebanese side is calm and stable, and it is being scrutinized, despite the fact that Israel launched Northern Shield operation over the alleged Hezbollah's tunnels in southern Lebanon on Tuesday morning".
Following Israel's launch of a major defensive campaign in the north to beat back the threat posed by the Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon, the Russian embassy in Israel communicated qualified support for Israel's right to self-defense.
As operations continued on Thursday, the Israeli army said it had contacted the United Nations peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) which monitors the border region regarding a tunnel allegedly originating on the Lebanese side of the border.
A representative of the Lebanese army said on Wednesday during a trilateral meeting with the Israeli military and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that Israel must leave "occupied territories" in southern Lebanon, a statement of the Lebanese Armed Forces said.
Officials said the tunnel is being dug from the Lebanese village of Ramyeh and has already crossed into Israeli territory.
The cross-border tunnels "are wider and larger, and their goal is to transfer battalions, large forces, into Israeli territory, in order to come in and carry out a killing spree and kidnappings and to capture villages", he said.
"We are denying our enemies the weapon of tunnels systematically and decisively", he said.

Some in Lebanon have questioned the IDF's tunnel claims despite a number of images and footage released by Israel purportedly documenting the sophisticated 6-by-6-foot underground passageway. "It's now clear that Iran used its windfall from the Obama Iran nuclear deal to arm Hezbollah for an all-out war against Israel, and that the United States must do more to undo the damage of that deal. "When you add what Hamas has been doing in the Gaza Strip, and what Iran itself has been doing from Syria, there's no escaping the conclusion that Iran has been waging a low level war against Israel while preparing for a massive regional war", the source warned.
Israel has not detailed how many tunnels have been detected, although Cornicus on Thursday said the army was working in three different areas along the border.
The Israeli operation is expected to last for weeks, or even months.
