Philadelphia netted infielder Jean Segura, right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio and lefty James Pazos from the salary-dumping Seattle Mariners in exchange for infielders J.P. Crawford and Carlos Santana. Machado could play shortstop for the New York Yankees in 2019 as Didi Gregorius recovers from Tommy John Surgery, but the team would probably move Machado back to the hot corner upon Gregorius' return.
This past season, Segura hit.304/.341/.415 along with 10 home runs and 61 RBI. The deal isn't expected to affect their pursuit of Manny Machado or Bryce Harper.
Along with his defensive skills, Segura has proven to be a valuable hitter as well, so if Philadelphia fans weren't excited about the shortstop before, they better get on board the hype train since this could turn out to be one of the most underrated moves of the offseason.
The 28-year-old, who waived his no-trade clause to join the Phillies, doesn't strike out much either. It would be pretty surprising at this point if Segura wasn't with the Phillies before the Winter Meetings, which start next Monday, and it seems like Crawford will be involved.
The main prize in the deal for Seattle is Crawford, who is just 23 and has a high ceiling as a strong defender with on-base skills.

Shortstop was a place Phillies General Manager Matt Klentak was not happy with last season.
At shortstop last season, Segura only had 17 errors and a fielding percentage of.969, which is a vast improvement from 2017 where he had a.962 Fld%.
