Police will charge a 26-year-old man with the murder of missing backpacker Grace Millane.
The 22-year-old from Essex - described by her father as "lovely" and "family-orientated" - was last seen in New Zealand a week ago.
Auckland City Police Detective Inspector Scott Beard said on Saturday: "Just after 3pm this afternoon (2am GMT) a 26-year-old man was located at a central Auckland address by police, he was brought back here to the Auckland Central Police Station and is now speaking to us in relation to the murder of Grace Millane".
"I know that the thoughts of all new Zealanders will be with Grace's family tonight, and I want to reassure everyone both here and overseas that New Zealand Police are determined to do everything we can to find her", he said.
At 9.41pm Millane and the 26-year-old man taken in by police today were seen on CCTV entering CityLife Hotel, which has entrances on both Queen and Durham Sts.
Officers and forensic experts are still carrying out a scene examination at the CityLife hotel where Ms Millane was last seen on Saturday 1 December.
Police said they were still looking for Ms Millane, although evidence pointed to the fact she had been killed.
She graduated from the University of Lincoln in September and had embarked on a year-long worldwide trip.
Her passport is also missing.

Police want the public to help find this necklace belonging to backpacker Grace Millane.
Police have no evidence to suggest the pair knew each other before December 1, Inspector Beard said. I'm not going to speculate on how they met.
A tearful David Millane appealed to the public to come forward with any information, "no matter how small".
Images of her pale pink watch and silver necklace were released by police after it was noted they were missing from her belongings at the backpackers' hostel where she was staying. "The issue here is Grace is still missing and we want to find her".
