Ecuador s foreign minister Jose Valencia said at the time that Britain was merely asking him to appear in court to answer for having broken his bail conditions, and that he was likely to get a sentence of no more than six months.
The UK has assured in a written statement that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange would not be extradited to any nation where he would face the death penalty, said Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno on Thursday in a radio interview.
President Moreno also said, "I do not like the presence of Mr. Assange in the Ecuadorean embassy, but we have been respectful of his human rights".
"The road is clear for Mr Assange to take the decision to leave", Moreno was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.
Ecuador has been looking to evict Assange from its London embassy for several months amid souring relations.
Federal criminal charges against Assange have been filed secretly in the United States and were accidentally leaked in a court filing for an unrelated case several weeks ago.

WikiLeaks has been a focus of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of any links between associates of President Donald Trump and Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
Last year Jeff Sessions, the former USA attorney general, said arresting Mr Assange was a priority.
But he said Ecuador was not about to throw Assange out.
Sweden has since dropped that case, and Ecuador says there are no pending extradition requests against the WikiLeaks founder.
In November a filing error revealed that Mr Assange faced charges in the United States - although it was not clear what those charges were.
He noted that Assange still faces jail time in the United Kingdom for violating bail terms when he sought asylum to avoid being extradited to Sweden, where authorities wanted to question him as part of a sexual assault investigation.
