A powerful natural disaster shook southern Alaska on Friday morning, buckling roads, disrupting traffic and jamming telephone lines in and around Anchorage, the state's largest city, but there were no reports of injuries.
A large quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck Alaska near Anchorage early Friday morning, damaging roads and buildings, knocking out power and sending people fleeing from buildings and to safety beneath door jambs.
The former Alaska Governor and vice presidential candidate tweeted that her house was not intact after the quake, but did not elaborate on specific damage. It damaged nearby businesses and sent shockwaves through homes. There were then multiple aftershocks in the region, with one as high as 5.1-magnitude.
Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz said the extent of damage was "relatively small" considering the scale of Friday's quake.
