At 2:04 pm Thursday a brush fire ignited in the area of Hill Canyon in the Santa Rosa Valley, now called the Hill Fire. By last night it had scorched up to 7,000 acres.
At least 75,000 homes in Ventura and Los Angeles counties are under evacuation orders, and some structures have already been destroyed, officials said.
The fire department said 30,000 homes were threatened in a tweet Friday morning.
However there were no immediate reports of deaths or serious injuries.
The blaze that started Thursday morning east of Paradise and decimated the town also spread to the west.
A strike team of five fire engines and a battalion chief was sent at about 4 p.m., said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jack Crabtree.
Borchard Community Center, Rancho Santa Susana Recreation Center, Camarillo Community Center, Thousand Oaks Teen Center, and Goebel Adult Community Center are open in Ventura County.
Evacuation notices were announced for Chico, which is home to around 93,000 people and is about 90 miles north of Sacramento.
More than 400 firefighters from Ventura County, Los Angeles County, the City of Los Angeles and Cal Fire were battling the brush fire.
