A knife-wielding man has stabbed two people, one fatally, in Melbourne in an attack believed to be linked to terrorism, police said.
The utility truck carrying barbecue gas cylinders burned on busy Bourke Street just before the evening rush hour as the driver stabbed bystanders and attacked police.
Victoria state Police Commissioner Graham Ashton said Shire Ali, who was shot by police and died in a hospital, was known to police and the federal intelligence authority ASIO.
Footage captured the shocking scenes as a auto went up in flames and police shot the knife-wielding man in the chest after he confronted officers as they arrived at the scene.
According to them, the police initially responded to a report of a vehicle on fire near the corner of Swanston Street about 4.20 pm (10.50 am IST). He was taken into custody in a critical condition.
