Jeff Flake, went into overtime for nearly a week until Monday evening when the Associated Press called the race and Republican Rep. Martha McSally conceded to her rival.
"I have never been into politics until this year", said Ms Oralia Ochoa, 26, a first-time voter who cast her ballot for Ms Sinema and other Democrats. Sinema first came to prominence as an openly bisexual Green Party activist in Phoenix. "It's risky and it lessens who we are as a country, but Arizona proved there is a better way forward.' She also paid tribute to 'irreplaceable" senator John McCain, saying 'his example shines a light on our way forward'.
Republican Martha McSally showed an early lead in the race to replace Sen. Jeff Flake, a critic of the President's incendiary rhetoric.
"Its up to all of us to carry on Senator McCain's legacy", Sinema said. She cited the example of John McCain, who died in August.
Arizona's Senate race isn't over.
On her verified campaign Twitter account Monday, McSally congratulated Sinema. That forced her to move to the right, especially on immigration.Читайте также: Marvel Stars, Celebs And Fans React To Stan Lee's Death
The contest drew more than $90 million in spending, including more than $58 million by outside groups, according to Federal Election Commission reports.
Sinema, 42, has a law degree, worked as a social worker and was a political activist in her 20s, running as an independent Green Party candidate for the Arizona House. Flake is leaving the Senate at the end of the current legislative term.
McSally, 52, was the first female Air Force pilot to fly in combat, flying A-10 attack jets. On the other hand, McSally was hurt by her vote to strip people of coverage for pre-existing conditions, something she tried to deny. Gabby Giffords after she was wounded in a 2011 assassination attempt. That person would run for re-election in 2020.
The win comes despite President Donald Trump and Republicans pushing false conspiracy theories about why ballots in Arizona were taking so long to count.
McSally's campaign and state-level GOP officials ignored national Republicans' tactics of casting doubt on the election's results. He strongly backed last year's tax cut bill but criticized Trump's positions on free trade.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
