Ten days earlier, militants struck Somalia and USA forces in Mubarak, in central Somalia, killing one Somali soldier.
"We now assess this airstrike killed approximately sixty (60) terrorists", said the statement.
Al-Shabaab, which seeks to establish an Islamic state in Somalia, continues to hold parts of the country's south and central regions after being chased out of Mogadishu several years ago.
Since 2007, the U.S. military's combat drones have waged war against al-Qaeda's affiliates in Somalia, among them Al-Shabaab.
While the United States has conducted 27 airstrikes against al-Shabaab in 2018, though usually the strikes target small groups of militants. The United States carries out air strikes in a number of countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia.
No civilian casualties have been reported in the latest airstrike which officials say hit only the intended target in a rural area.
The US Africa Command spokesman said the air strike had no link to the anniversary of a massive bomb that killed almost 600 people in Mogadishu.

There are about 500 USA military personnel in Somalia participating in an advise and assist mission with the Somali military.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters. But reports on the ground show civilians are usually the main victims of such attacks.
Two US defense officials told CNN the strike was carried out by an unmanned drone.
At the time, Conrad's death was the second American combat loss in Somalia in about a year.
The casualties were the first to have been publicised in Africa since an ambush in Niger in October 2017 killed four USA soldiers.
