Twitter on Wednesday released data on foreign influence campaigns on its platform showing some 10 million tweets, mostly from Russian Federation, dating back as far as 2009.
"One of the big takeaways is just how big these operations were". But it now says it wants researchers to have full access to the data to help gain a better understanding of how such trolling operations work. But the Iranian network at times did dabble in US politics, including one account called usresistance1, created in April 2018, that advocated for Trump's impeachment.
The Russian operation had multiple goals, including interfering in the United States presidential election, dividing polarized online communities, unifying support for Russia's global interests, and weakening trust in American institutions, according to the DFRLab.
"Particularly in the Russian dataset a lot more of the content was in Russian than in English", said Nimmo.

Now, after promising the US Congress that it was going to thoroughly investigate what happened prior to the election, Twitter is dumping millions of tweets online in huge datasets.
"It is clear that information operations and coordinated inauthentic behavior will not cease", wrote Vijaya Gadde, the legal, public policy, and trust and safety lead at Twitter, and Yoel Roth, the company's head of site integrity, in a blog post. All of these data were published by the social network unchanged.
Twitter said it doesn't expect such information operations to stop and expects bad actors to continue to adapt to new technologies.
"Russia's troll operation primarily targeted Russian speakers, while Iran's focused on pushing regime messaging overseas by promoting aligned websites".
