After declaring this "assault on our country" a top priority for him as president, Trump concluded: "Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border. I'm stunned [by] what this country has become".
"The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the Criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as President, than Trade or the USMCA", he tweeted, referring to a trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada.
President Trump is again ramping up his rhetoric on an issue he said he hopes can energize his Republican base heading into the midterms, with an all-caps threat to shut down the southern USA border if Mexico doesn't stop the "onslaught" of a caravan of migrants fleeing Honduras. Democrats in 2013 led the charge to overhaul the nation's immigration laws, an effort that stalled because of opposition from Republicans who controlled the House.
The Honduran government has urged people not to join the caravan, but the government of Guatemala is powerless to stop its progress, as citizens of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua can freely move between the four countries showing only an ID card.Читайте также: Australia considers following USA on Jerusalem embassy
The issue has gained new urgency under Trump, whose "zero-tolerance" policy of enforcing border laws came under fire earlier this year after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a plan that included separating migrant families.
Per NBC News, Mexico dispatched an additional 500 federal police to the border with Guatemala ahead of the migrants' arrival.
As POTUS tweeted, a caravan of about 4K Honduran migrants continues its trek toward the United States.
In April, Trump signed a proclamation to send the National Guard to the border to keep the migrants from entering the United States. And it is also true that previous migrant flows have already exhausted our government's resources for detaining asylum-seekers and processing their claims (although, this is partly because the Trump administration refuses to expand alternatives to mass detention, largely out of a principled commitment to treating migrants with wanton cruelty). Some have said they are fleeing gang violence, and are traveling as a group for protection from criminal gangs.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
