The automaker is replacing the long-range battery in the rear-wheel-drive version of the compact sedan that retailed for $49,000 with a mid-range battery that drops the starting price to $45,000 and the range from 310 miles to 260 miles.
A Tesla Model 3 sedan, its first auto aimed at the mass market, is displayed during its launch in Hawthorne, California, March 31, 2016. Musk also revealed that the Model 3 ordering process has been simplified and now has fewer options.
DON'T MISS: Is the Tesla Model 3 the top-selling vehicle from an American brand? On Thursday, CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce a new, mid-range version of the Model 3 that costs $35,000-after federal and state tax rebates.
The Model 3 sedan now being offered by Tesla can travel about 260 miles between charges and costs $45,000, some $4,000 below the starting price of the sedan that the company began selling a year ago, excluding options and incentives.
The midrange Model 3 should be welcome news for those who can't afford to shell out upward of $60,000 for an electric auto. However, as Reuters reports, this week Tesla introduced a rear-wheel drive mid range battery model for $45,000.
Tesla says the "standard battery" version will not be available for another 4 to 6 months.
So when's the actually-$35,000-before-incentives version of the Tesla Model 3 coming? Offering cheaper versions of the vehicle raised a "big and unanswered question" of Tesla maintaining profit targets for the auto, he said. Within days, the company had more than a quarter million reservations. Tesla did just take a step closer to achieving that, though. The performance dual motor all-wheel drive version costs $64,000 before incentives and gas savings, and the long range battery dual motor all-wheel drive version costs $54,000. Before the discounts, it will sell for $45,000 (roughly Rs. 33 lakhs) - though the company says buyers should think of the auto as far cheaper, because of the money they'll save on gas. Any new Tesla delivered after January 1st 2019 (but before July 1st 2019) is only eligible for a $3,750 IRS credit.
