The Soyuz MS-10, a Russian spacecraft, was transporting NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, when it launched from Kazakhstan. Everything had been going quite smoothly for Roscosmos ahead of the freakish hole discovered in one of their Soyuz spacecraft which was (and still is) attached to the International Space Station. Because of the altitude and speed, the crew had to enter what's known as a ballistic reentry, which is a much steeper angle than a normal reentry.
The current iteration of the manned Soyuz booster, the Soyuz-FG, had until today boasted a 100 percent success rate.
The pair are in contact with ground control, the space agency said.
"If it's something simple and easily fixable, then they could get back to flight fairly quickly - but things with rockets are hardly ever simple and easily fixable".
While Russian rockets had earned a stellar reputation for their reliability in the past, a string of failed launches in recent years has called into doubt Russia's ability to maintain the same high standards of their manufacturing. The first crewed flights would not take place until several months after that, unless the space agency is willing to take additional risks with those missions. The capsule landed about 20 kilometres east of the city of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan. Helicopters have already dispatched to look for the Soyuz space capsule, she said.
According to NASA, the problem occurred during the staging of the rocket's booster. Dean later confirmed the anomaly during live commentary.
The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, coordinated the launch, which had been planned for multiple years.
Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin retained an enviable sang-froid Thursday as he realised while travelling at thousands of miles an hour that his spacecraft would have to make an emergency landing +.
"I want to start by saying how proud I am of Nick Hague, our astronaut, and his wife Catie", NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement. The crew is now being brought to Moscow. The crew was able to abort, and their capsule proceeded on a ballistic reentry which touched down shortly thereafter. The men were supposed to inspect a mysterious 2-millimeter hole found in the hull of a Soyuz module, docked at the space station. To that end, a Russian government Investigative Committee is inspecting the launch site and seizing documents, AFP reports.
Wiseman said although crews are always ready for potential issues, "certainly there is a bit of shock in there for a moment, but communication with the crew was extremely professional".

Fans react as Mohamed Salah scores directly from a corner for Egypt
But Salah's night came to a premature end when he went down injured late in the game, appearing to hold his hamstring. If Tunisia beat Niger tomorrow then the Pharaohs would hold a five-point cushion to Swaziland in third.
