The Blue Jays went to the ALCS in back-to-back years in 2015-16, but won only 76 and 73 games in the last two seasons.
The Blue Jays have hired Charlie Montoyo as their new manager, Toronto announced Thursday.
Following his playing career, Montoyo joined the Rays' organization in 1997 and has worked his way up since. Montoyo managed the Durham Bulls for eight years, then served as the Rays' third base and bench coach since 2015.
This won't be the first time Montoyo will call Canada home, as he split the 1993 season between the Montreal Expos and Triple-A Ottawa Lynx during his playing days.
After the Blue Jays parted ways with Gibbons it was expected that they'd go with a younger, fresher face, and while Montoyo doesn't fit that mold superficially, he brings experience from a progressive organization the Blue Jays front office is known to admire. That likely made it all the more imperative for GM Ross Atkins and president Mark Shapiro to hand-pick a leader to develop a unified vision for the organization's culture and direction moving forward.

Dodgers win record seven-hour World Series game
Alexander fielded Nunez's tapper between the mound and first base, but his throw to a hustling Hernandez got away and Holt scored. To put this in perspective, Game 1 of the World Series past year ended 3-1 and was just 2 hours and 28 minutes long.
Charlie Montoyo is the 13th Blue Jays manager in the club's history.
In addition to being bilingual, which should help him deal with some of the top prospects in the Blue Jays' system, as Sportsnet's Shi Davidi pointed out, he comes from a Tampa Bay team with whom Blue Jays management was impressed when it comes to how they use data in decision-making both on and off the field.
"I am extremely honored and humbled to join the Toronto Blue Jays organization", Montoyo said in a statement. "Those are the overarching themes as I think about what it means to lead an environment in here to sustain championship-level expectations..." He managed the Rays' Triple-A team from 2007 to 2014, with great success. "His collaborative nature and leadership ability will undoubtedly have a broad impact across the club".
Montoyo will be officially introduced by the team at a media conference on Monday.
He also was a coach for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic in 2009.
