Indonesia's Lion Air said it has lost contact with a passenger jet flying from Jakarta to an island off Sumatra early Monday.
Bloomberg reported that the plane involved was a Boeing Co 737 Max-8 model.
After a short flight, it was due to arrive in Pangkal Pinang an hour later.
Indonesia's AirNav has alerted the search and rescue crews.
"We have forwarded the information to search and rescue teams".

A tugboat notified the Tanjung Priok sea port's Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) that it had spotted a plane plunging into the waters on Monday morning, according to Jakarta-based Elshinta radio.
The plane has now confirmed to have crashed into the sea, Reuters reports.
"We can not give any comment at this moment", Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group, told Reuters.
The Lion Air aircraft crashed about 13 minutes after taking off for Indonesia.
The plane was delivered to Lion King by Boeing in August this year.
