Hurricane Willa has intensified into a near-Category 5 storm in the Pacific - and is on track to slam into the western coast of Mexico by the middle of the week, officials said. As of 11 a.m. ET., Willa had maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour - just 3 miles per hour over the threshold for a Category 5.
Hurricane-force winds extended 30 miles (45 kilometers) from the storm's center, and tropical storm-force winds were up to 105 miles (1650 kilometers) out.
Hurricane Willa was about 270 miles (435 kilometres) south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes Sunday morning with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (155 kph).
Willa is expected to hit Mexico's Pacific Coast as at least a Category 3, potentially bringing life-threatening storm surge and flash floods farther inland.
"While some weakening is forecast by tonight and Tuesday, Willa is expected to be a risky hurricane when it reaches the coast of Mexico late Tuesday or early Wednesday", it said.
