Travellers were ordered to evacuate the large central station, which sits on Cologne's Dom Platz beneath the city's historic cathedral early Monday afternoon. It was not immediately clear how he was injured.
"We have indications that one man is holding one woman, but we haven't been able to really get close", Schulte said.
A woman has been taken hostage in the German city of Cologne, German police said.
She said: "We assume that a hostage has been taken, either at McDonald's or at a nearby pharmacy".
Police officer Christoph Schulte told The Associated Press that incident appears to have started Monday at 12:45 p.m.at a pharmacy inside the train station.
"The suspect is under control", Cologne police said on Twitter.
A police spokesperson told NBC News that "one woman has been taken hostage" but could not confirm if shots had been fired.
The woman sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Heavily armed police now surround the station, which has been evacuated and closed off to the public.
State rail operator Deutsche Bahn suspended all train traffic through Cologne, a major hub for rail travel through North Rhine-Westphalia state and nationwide. Ambulances and heavily-armed police were lined up behind the train station, the daily Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger reported.
