The Matthews Police Department confirms a student was killed following a shooting at Butler High School in Matthews.
One student told WSOC that the two students got into a verbal and physical fight before the victim was shot in the back by the suspect.
A lockdown was lifted at the school Monday morning and parents were allowed to pick up their children.
CMS Superintendent Dr. Clayton M. Wilcox said the student who was shot is now in surgery.

Matthews Police were reporting the shooting is believed to be an "isolated incident".
Matthews is located about 22 miles southeast of Charlotte.
Officers recovered the weapon used in the incident, officials said. The campus has been secured by law enforcement, no immediate danger exists and an investigation continues. "But we're also sorry for the young person who thought the only way to solve this problem was with a gun". Classes will proceed on campus today for students remaining on campus.
Dozens of parents gathered outside of the school of about 2,000 students to wait.
When the lockdown was lifted, television footage showed students streaming out, with many crying and hugging parents.
