Vietnam can breathe a sigh of relief as the massive storm, which has killed 64 people in the Philippines and two others in China, turned into a tropical depression at 10 a.m. on Monday after it made landfall on the coast of Jiangmen city, in China's Guangdong Province. Residents hunkered down in their apartments, and streets in the usually buzzing city were deserted Sunday.

Low-lying areas, including Lei Yue Mun, Heng Fa Chuen in Chai Wan, and Tai O were seriously flooded, and some people who live in tall residential towers claimed they could feel their buildings shaking. A red alert remained in effect for parts of southern China, where the typhoon was moving westward.

As the storm passed south of Hong Kong, trees were snapped in half and roads blocked, while some windows in tower blocks were smashed and skyscrapers swayed, as they are created to do in intense gales. The agency also issued a landslide warning, and urged residents to keep away from steep slopes. Roads were littered with fallen trees, some completely impassable, while glass from blown-out windows glistened along the sidewalks.
