As massive as Hurricane Florence is, which is bearing down on the Carolinas, Super Typhoon Mangkhut is even bigger and has more distance and time to grow further.
The United Nations Global Disaster Alerting Coordination system‚ GDACS‚ warns Mangkhut "is expected to have a high humanitarian impact based on the storm strength and the affected population in the past and the forecasted path".
It is now barrelling across the Pacific with gusts of 255km per hour.
Super Typhoon Mangkhut, known as Super Typhoon Ompong in the Philippines, is now equivalent to a category 5 Atlantic hurricane, with winds of at least 252 kilometers per hour (157 mph), stronger than Florence, which is expected to cause massive flooding and devastation in the Carolinas.
"We're anxious for the 10 million people in the Philippines living in the path of this destructive storm", said Richard Gordon, chairman of the Philippine Red Cross.

However, since the diameter of the typhoon measures at 900km wide, it is expected to affect and bring torrential rains and strong winds to the northern and most parts of Central Luzon. "The typhoon is threatening Northern Luzon and may traverse the Cagayan-Batanes area this Saturday".
The civil defence office in Manila said towns and cities on Mangkhut's path are preparing government buildings as evacuation centres, stockpiling food and other emergency rations, and preparing rescue teams and equipment.
Weather forecaster Robert Sawi assured that the incoming typhoon will be weaker than super typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda, which claimed thousands of lives and destroyed billions of pesos worth of assets in 2013.
On Thursday, Ompong could also reach a peak intensity of 220 km/h in terms of maximum winds and 270 km/h in terms of gustiness. The remnants of the storm will still be in the area as Mangkhut arrives Sunday, bringing no relief to Hong Kongers from the weather.
