The confirmation fight comes just weeks before November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are seeking to win control of Congress from the Republicans.
As noted here, Senate Judiciary Committee Grassley gave Christine Blasey Ford a deadline of 10:00 p.m. tonight to respond to his counter-proposal on the terms for Ford giving testimony about her claim against Brett Kavanaugh.
As Stolberg notes, Team Ford had objected to the "arbitrary deadline" and the peremptory tone of Grassley's negotiating stance, suggesting that he was determined to set unreasonable conditions so that the testimony could not proceed.
The statement to the Senate came after Republicans vowed Thursday morning to press forward with a vote on Kavanaugh if Ford declined to testify on Monday.
Senate Republicans agreed nearly immediately after Ford's name became public that her story should be heard.
