The NHC's hurricane warning covers all of coastal MS and Alabama, with a tropical storm warning reaching to Morgan City, Alabama, and Florida's Okaloosa-Walton County Line.
A hurricane watch is in effect for the area stretching from the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border. A storm surge watch existed for west of Shell Beach to the mouth of the Mississippi River, and east of the Mississippi-Alabama border to Navarre.
The storm is expected to move away from the southwestern Florida coast and reach coastal MS and Louisiana by late Tuesday.
Tropical Storm Gordon lashed South Florida with heavy rains and high winds on Monday and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane when it hits the central U.S. Gulf Coast.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned of storm surges of between 3 and 5 feet (1 and 1.5 meters) and told South Mississippi residents to be prepared to evacuate.

In southern Alabama, southern MS, and Louisiana, rain totals are predicted at 4 to 6 inches through Thursday, with up to 8 inches (20 centimetres) in some areas.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center.

Rain has drenched the Miami area as Tropical Storm Gordon moved into the Gulf of Mexico on Monday.
Gordon is about 190 miles east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River and packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, according to the 8 a.m. advisory Tuesday from the National Hurricane Center. It drenched Florida on Labor Day, forcing officials in Miami and the Florida Panhandle to close beaches due to rough surf and potential rip currents. A number of schools called off classes, people rushed to fill bags with sand, and red no-swimming flags flew along the shore as waves kicked up from the approaching storm.
