The BFR was first announced in 2016, touted as the most powerful rocket in history, even more potent than the Saturn V Moon rocket that launched the Apollo missions five decades ago.
In typical fashion for any company owned by Elon Musk, they've chose to do so by blasting a single person - the world's first private passenger, around the moon and back to test the rocket's capability for far space travel. To see the moon up close "was a lifelong dream", he said.
Japanese billionaire and online fashion tycoon Yusaku Maezawa, 42, announced: "I choose to go to the Moon".
He has not decided which artists to invite, but will be reaching out to painters, sculptors, film directors, architects, fashion designers and others. "Please don't say no", Maezawa said. While he might not be a household name in the West, he is famous in his own country as the founder of the Amazon-like shopping portal Zozotown, Japan's largest online retailer.
He recently dropped a cool $110,5 million on a Jean-Michel Basquiat painting at Sotheby's in NY, so you know he has cash to burn. They will travel on a free return trajectory, carrying the BFR to the moon's far side, the side never seen from Earth, then back to Earth again. These masterpieces will inspire the dreamer within all of us'.
The ISS orbits 254 miles (408 km) above Earth.
Only 24 humans have visited the Moon - all of them Americans; 12 of them landed on the moon. Twelve walked on the lunar surface.
On Monday, Mr Musk unveiled new artist impressions of the BFR and the spaceship which will carry passengers around the Moon.

Salisbury restaurant cordoned off by police after 'Russian' taken ill
The two men went on Russian TV last week and said they were only tourists who had visited Salisbury to see its famous cathedral. The UK government has accused two Russian men, Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, of attempting to kill the Skripals.
"To be clear: This is unsafe", the billionaire explained.
"It's hard to say what Elon Musk can do". There's some chance that something could go wrong.
Asked why the company made further changes, Musk said he "did not like the aesthetics" of the previous version. He did suggest like maybe that I would join on this trip.
Mr Musk did not name the clients previous year or say how much they would pay.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah", said Maezawa.
Earlier on Twitter, Mr Musk had already hinted that the passenger would be from Japan. The rocket dubbed BFR has not been built so any flight presumably is at least several years away. Under the current design, the BFR will be 118 meters long, with a payload capacity of 1,100 cubic meters and 100 metric tons. The company said the passengers paid a "significant deposit" for the trip but did not identify them. The company's upcoming reusable rocket is slated to cost $5 billion to develop over the coming years.
Entrepreneur Elon Musk's space launch company said last week that the person will fly to the moon aboard a new rocket called the BFR, which is still in development. Company representatives declined to offer additional details Friday.
