"The Holy Father Francis, after hearing the Council of Cardinals, has made a decision to convene a meeting with the Presidents of the Episcopal Conferences of the Catholic Church on the theme of "Protection of Minors", the Vatican said.
More recently, Francis's papacy was hit by accusations from a retired Vatican ambassador that he helped a top American cardinal evade sanctions imposed by Pope Benedict for molesting and harassing adult seminarians.
Many in the archdiocese have asked Wuerl to step down in recent weeks, including more than 40 Catholic school teachers who protested outside their back-to-school Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine, and a highly visible deacon at St. Matthew's Cathedral, who said he would refuse to participate in the Mass with the cardinal.
The Vatican has known since at least 2000 that the archbishop would habitually invite seminary students to his New Jersey beach house and into his bed.
The three who were absent were: 85-year-old Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz Ossa, retired archbishop of Santiago, Chile, who is facing questioning over his handling of abuse allegations; Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya of Kinshasa, Congo, who turns 79 in early October; and 77-year-old Australian Cardinal George Pell, who now is on trial in Australia on sex abuse charges.
The Vatican hasn't responded to the accusations by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, but has promised "clarifications" that presumably will come sometime after Francis' meeting Thursday with the US delegation.Читайте также: Rose reveals angry halftime exchange between England players
DiNardo has also said recent accusations that top Vatican officials - including the current Pope - covered up for McCarrick since 2000 deserve answers. "This is an excellent action, but I think it should happen quicker than six months from now".
The Americans have called on Francis to launch a Vatican-led investigation into how Theodore McCarrick, a former USA cardinal, climbed the ranks, even as rumours swirled about his behaviour.
But the USA plan has looked less like a model recently, given it exempted bishops like McCarrick.
Wuerl, 77, who was bishop of Pittsburgh between 1988 and 2006, has been under scrutiny over his handling of sexual abuse cases during the period addressed by the Pennsylvania Grand Jury.
The uproar over McCarrick's conduct and the release last month of a shocking Pennsylvania grand jury report on clergy sex abuse together amount to the most serious crisis facing the Vatican in years. It also alleged that he concealed information when priests were reported to law enforcement and oversaw insufficient church investigations into abuse. The news outlets said the report was due to be released September 25 and they obtained it in advance.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
