The CBS board, Moonves and Shari Redstone - president of National Amusements, Inc. and CBS' controlling shareholder - were engaged in a bitter business dispute even before the first sexual misconduct allegations against Moonves. All six of the women were named. You'll see them cover for each other and get powerful women to cover for them.
What are the latest claims?
The New Yorker on Sunday published a second round of reporting on Moonves, adding to a July report in which women accused him of sexual harassment and intimidation.
According to HuffPost's sources, Timberlake "tearfully apologized" for the incident and was allowed to perform at the Grammys, but Moonves was "furious that Jackson didn't make a similarly contrite apology to him", and subsequently sought to further undercut her career.
Reached by telephone, one of the women, Phyllis Golden-Gottlieb, referred questions to a lawyer, Gloria Allred, who did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Moonves acknowledged making mistakes in his past but said he never abused his power. What is true is that I had consensual relations with three of the women some 25 years ago before I came to CBS. In my 40 years of work, I have never before heard of such disturbing accusations.
Time's Up released a statement slamming CBS for a "culture of toxic complicity" at the company, and insisted that it will "accept nothing less than full transparency of the investigation's findings, a commitment to real change across all levels of CBS management and no reward for Les Moonves". The news made headlines, and CBS promised to investigate the allegations, but since then there's been radio silence from the network as Moonves quietly continues on as CEO (he is now negotiating his exit from the company).
In a statement, CBS cited the ongoing investigation.
What were the earlier allegations?
Moonves stands to earn upward of $100 million on his way out, but CBS is expected to try to "claw back" at least some of that compensation if the investigation finds evidence of misconduct.Several accusers said Moonves - considered one of the most powerful people in television - retaliated against them when they rebuffed his advances.
The statement concluded by warning CBS and members of the board that many are watching as they decide what steps to take next: "CBS, as you sit in a room debating next steps to rectify the damage done, remember that the world is watching. But I always understood and respected. that "no" means "no".
Say goodbye to Les Moonves at CBS!
Golden-Gottlieb said she made no complaint at the time because she was a single mother supporting two children.
The sum being floated in the media for his resignation package is some $100m (£77m).
Instead, the board retained a pair of law firms to investigate the allegations. Entertainment - called on CBS to fire Moonves without any severance package.
Les Moonves started out as a TV actor before developing Friends and ER with Warner Bros and then reviving an ailing CBS with hits including CSI, Everybody Loves Raymond and, most recently, The Big Bang Theory.
