"South and North agreed to hold the inter-Korean summit from September 18 to 20 in Pyongyang, and to hold working-level talks at Panmunjom next week", Chung said.
Kim Jong un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will meet in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, as the North Korean leader reaffirmed his commitment towards the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Seoul's National Security Office chief Chung Eui-yong walk together at their meeting in Pyongyang on Wednesday.
While the United States maintains that efforts to improve relations between the Koreas should move in tandem with efforts to denuclearize North Korea, Moon has recently said inter-Korean engagement could take the lead.
He made the remarks as he received a high-level South Korean delegation in Pyongyang on Wednesday, for discussions aimed at planning a new inter-Korean summit, and breaking the deadlock in denuclearisation talks between the North and the US.
President Moon, who had mediated the first US-North Korea summit held in Singapore in June, is expected to play a bigger role trying to push for a breakthrough in the impasse, so as to advance inter-Korea ties with blessings from its security ally US.
The pledge comes after Trump, frustrated with a lack of progress on disarmament, last month canceled Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's trip to Pyongyang after the North reportedly sent a belligerent letter to the USA leader.
North Korea's official KCNA news agency said Kim told Chung and other envoys that it was his "fixed stand" to turn the Korean peninsula into "the cradle of peace without nuclear weapons and free from nuclear threat". But U.S. officials say North Korea must take more serious disarmament measures.

Conservatives hope that Kavanaugh's confirmation could create a conservative majority on the court, potentially for decades. The president nominates the justices for the Supreme Court and every USA senator votes on whether to confirm that justice.

Saying that Kim had expressed his willingness to "take more proactive steps" if the USA takes measures corresponding to those Pyongyang has taken so far this year, Chung went on to say that the North appeared to be hoping for Seoul to play a bigger role in related matters.
Chung's trip came amid deadlocked diplomacy over North Korea's nuclear program.
Pyongyang has said the United States needs to reciprocate North Korea's goodwill gestures, which also include the return of USA war remains, by stating an official end to the 1950-53 Korean War. The two leaders will again discuss making progress on denuclearizing the peninsula, relieving military tensions near the border and opening a joint liaison office in the Kaesong Industrial Complex.
The war ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, meaning US -led United Nations forces, including South Korea, are technically still at war with the North.
The U.S. Embassy in Seoul on Thursday said it had no information to share on the matter.
Kim dismissed such worries, Chung said, and told the South Korean delegation that a formal end of the Korean War would not be linked to the withdrawal of the U.S. troops.
"Kim also made it clear that he needs some kind of proof Trump has abandoned the U.S.'s hostile policy before moving toward denuclearisation".
