Airstrikes by Israeli forces destroyed a Boeing plane loaded with Iranian weapons, hours after it landed at the Damascus International Airport, media reports said Sunday.
Its officials say they want a federal Syria that respects their autonomy from Damascus, the AP news agency reported.
"Our air defenses responded to an Israeli missile attack on Damascus International Airport and shot down a number of hostile missiles", said a Syrian Arab Army source quoted by SANA. A SANA reporter meanwhile reported sounds of explosions in the vicinity of the airport. According to the report, efforts have been made to hide the true goal of the warehouses with roof-painted legends such as "UN" or "DHL", the worldwide mail company, in an apparent attempt to elude Israeli intelligence.
A UK-based war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the missiles hit a weapons depot outside the airport. The monitoring group had no immediate word on casualties, saying the strike did cause material damage.
A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said Israel does not comment on foreign reports.
