The sanctions will take effect on August 22, the State Department noted.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has signed off on a determination that Russian Federation violated global law by poisoning the former spy, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia, in March, the officials said.
"The government of the Russian Federation has used chemical or biological weapons in violation of worldwide law", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.
In late March, Trump ordered 60 more Russian diplomats expelled from the United States as part of a global response to the attack - a response that included similar expulsions of diplomats from other nations checking Russia. Authorities determined that they had been attacked with a military-grade Russian nerve agent known as Novichok.
NBC, a U.S. news network, cited a senior state department official as saying that the sanctions would be structured in two tranches.
